Ingredient Spotlight: Macrocystis Pyrifera (Kelp) Extract

We believe natural products don't have to be stinky, sticky, or stuffy. We're all about good, clean fundown to our nitty-gritty ingredients. We follow good manufacturing practices to make sure every ingredient is clearly sourced, clean, animal cruelty-free, and all-natural. Today, we're talking about Kelp Extract!

Macrocystis Pyrifera

Pronounced: "Macro-sis-tiss Py-riff-ear-a"

What it is:

Macrocystis Pyrifera is more commonly known as Giant Kelp, is a species of large brown algae found along the eastern coast of the Pacific Ocean. M. pyrifera is the largest species of algae and individual strands can grow more than 150 feet long in kelp forests, which provide homes to many marine animals.

What it does:

While kelp has been used as a food source for ages, at the beginning of the 20th century, California kelp beds were harvested as a source for soda ash. Soda ash, or sodium carbonate is a natural water softener.  Kelp extract is filled with vitamins and minerals, which allow it to soothe and reduce skin sensitivity. It also protects and maintains skin's natural pH balance. Kelp extract also promotes skin hydration as well as tightening of the skin, and has aging and anti-inflammatory properties. Kelp extract also works wonders on hair, adding moisture and shine to dry hair.

Where we use it:

We use kelp extract in our Hair & Body Wash and Bubble Bath. Kelp Extract is just one of the many ingredients in our Wash & Bubble Bath that replenishes skins' moisture opposed to stripping little ones' skin of natural oils during bath time.
