Behind the Scenes with Chloé Fleury

Meet the genius behind all the CUTEST paper art in our Spring + Easter collection launch, Chloé Fleury! She's a supermom, set designer and everything we hope to be when we're older. From her LA studio, she creates whimsical paper worlds for brands and magazines, all while juggling life with three artistic kiddos (who are always first in line to raid her prop boxes after shoots!). We sat down with Chloé to chat about her creative process, spring traditions, and of course, all things Tubby Todd.

Q: Are you team bath or team shower?

A: I’m team shower because I love taking a bath but I rarely make time for it. The new Tubby Todd Lemon Fizz Bath Bombs are definitely going to change that though, after smelling them on set while shooting the animations that is all I've been dreaming about! They just smell like Spring, amazing!!! My kids are definitely team bath though, they love sharing one to play and also relax after a long day at school. My son Zadig can't get enough of Bubble Bath, he always asks for more and we are going through bottles very fast!

Q: You're stuck on an island and can only bring 2 art supplies—what are they?

A: I’d say colored pencils and a sketchbook. I haven't really made the time to draw for a really long time, since doing paper art I guess. I'd really really like to get back at it (I was drawing a lot! From a very young age to my twenties). I guess if I was stuck on an island, I'd have all the time in the world and no more reasons to procrastinate. I often think that I would love to be by myself in a cabin in the woods for a few days, no kids, no husband, no phone. Just me and my art supplies to experiment, no one to interrupt me! No school pick up, no activities to drive to or grocery shopping.

Q: If you had to pick, what one color most represents SPRING for you and why?

A: That's a tough one! I love all the colors and so many could represent the colors of Spring like the fruits and the flowers but let's say sky blue! After the long grey and rainy days of Winter come the blue skies in Spring.

Q: How did you get started in set design?

A: For as long as I can remember I have loved making things with my hands. When I was a kid I loved doing Origami and miniatures, making paper boxes, decorating my bedroom and creating an atmosphere. I went to art school in France studying Visual Arts. I knew I wanted to be an illustrator. I was working on my own style mixing mediums, doing collages with paint, paper, fabric...I had a stop motion animation workshop in my last year of school and I completely fell in love with it, bringing pieces of paper and cardboard to life was fascinating to me. After graduation I moved to San Francisco and I just got really inspired by the colors of San Francisco and its beautiful architecture. I started making colorful paper houses and creating miniature neighborhoods. That is how I found my style and got to work for magazines illustrating stories, doing animations for brands and I had my own online store selling paper animal busts I made to decorate kids bedrooms. A few years later I moved to Los Angeles and realized I could use my paper art skills on photoshoots by making props and creating sets! Fun!

Q: Do your three kiddos know how cool their mom is?!

A: I hope so ;)) haha. They definitely think my job is cool! They are always super excited to see what I make for photoshoots and even more excited when I come back after a shoot. I barely have a foot in the house when they start digging into the boxes of props and products I brought and ask me if they can keep things now that I am done with them. Anouk likes to keep my paper decors to play with all her figurines. They got to come with me on set recently and help and they had so much fun. They keep asking me when is the next shoot. Plus my 11 years old is very into skincare and she is always like “Mom, I thought about something: I think you should email this brand to show your portfolio. They are very colorful just like you and it would be very cool if you worked with them that way. I can get free products!!" Haha!

Q: What's one of your fam's favorite spring or Easter traditions?

A: Eating chocolates!!!

Q: Which scent from the Spring/Easter Tubby Todd collection is your fave?

A: Can't choose, I honestly love them all!
