What to get for Back-to-School

Basic supplies: Of course you’ll want to fill your little one’s backpack with the essentials, pencils, paper, crayons, etc. Most school websites have suggested supply lists for each grade. Despite the usual chaos at the store, it can be fun to watch your little genius pick out his own pencil case and scissors. Before you head out, be sure to check your stash at home for things that might be on the list. If you’d rather skip the store altogether (and who could blame you?), you can enter your zip code at WalMart.com or Target.com and find your school’s supply list that way.

Close-toed shoes: It’s time to trade those worn-out flip flops for a sturdy pair of close-toed shoes. There’s a huge variety out there, and depending on your little one’s taste and preferences, anything from running shoes to slip-on sneakers to Mary Janes will work great. It’s a good idea to look for sales online before heading out. Many stores offer great deals at this time of year.

Backpacks: Picking a backpack is always a highlight for my kids. They love finding one that speaks to their own individuality and style. Of course, I’m always looking for something that can take a beating without falling apart mid-year. The L.L. Bean Original Book Pack (or Junior Original for grades K-2) is reasonably priced and covered with a lifetime warranty. JanSport bags also offer high quality and come in dozens of designs and colors.

Good luck getting everything ready before the big send off. You can do it, Mama!
